Piercing is a shearing process where a punch and die are used to create a hole in sheet metal or a plate. High-speed steel (HSS or HS) is a subset of tool steels, frequently used as cutting tool material. Adding tungsten, molybdenum, and chromium steel creates a number of alloys commonly called “HSS”, measuring 63-65 Rockwell hardness. High-speed steels are alloys that gain their properties from either tungsten or molybdenum, often with a combination of the two.

Piercing Punches FAQ’s

A piercing punch is a precision cutting component that enters a matching die opening to create a hole or profile in sheet metal. The removed slug is scrap, while the remaining sheet is the required part. Punch geometry, material, clearance, alignment and stripping determine hole quality and tool life.
The press drives the punch into the sheet while the die supports the material around the opening. Elastic deformation is followed by plastic penetration and fracture, releasing the slug. The punch then withdraws while the stripper removes the sheet from the punch. Each stage affects load, burr and wear.
Both are shearing operations. In piercing, the punched-out slug is scrap and the surrounding sheet is the required component. In blanking, the cut-out blank is the product and the remaining strip is scrap. This distinction determines whether the punch or die controls the critical finished dimension.
