Step Piercing Punches

Vardhman Dies & Mould Tools manufacturing and exporting high quality Step Piercing Punches worldwide.

Step Piercing Punches are used in machines for press shaping between metal sheets and die to make a shape. Piercing is a shearing process where a punch and die are used to create a hole in sheet metal or a plate. The process and machinery are usually the same as that used in blanking, except that the piece being punched out is scrap in the piercing process.

High-speed steel (HSS or HS) is a subset of tool steels, frequently used as cutting tool material. Adding tungsten, molybdenum, and chromium steel creates a number of alloys commonly called “HSS”, measuring 63-65 Rockwell hardness. High-speed steels are alloys that gain their properties from either tungsten or molybdenum, often with a combination of the two.

Step Piercing Punches FAQ’s

Step piercing punches are press-tool punches with a smaller cutting point and one or more larger supporting or guiding sections. The stepped geometry can provide a cutting diameter, shoulder, guide land, relief or stronger shank. The exact function must be defined by the approved punch and die drawing.
The smaller active point enters the sheet and matching die opening, producing a pierced slug. The larger step normally supports or guides the point and should not contact the sheet or die unless specifically designed. During withdrawal, the stripper removes the sheet while the slug exits through the die.
A plain punch typically has a single working diameter that acts as both cutting point and shank. A step punch has two or more different diameters along its length, allowing a strong shank to drive a small or delicate point. This reduces unsupported length and bending risk.
A step punch should be used when piercing small holes in strong or thick sheet material, where a plain punch of the same point diameter would buckle, vibrate or break. The thicker step provides stiffness and guidance close to the cutting area, leaving only a short unsupported point length.
The page lists 0.2 mm to 50 mm, but a stepped punch requires at least two distinct diameters. Buyers must specify the point diameter and the shank diameter separately. The range should be checked against the exact point size and required shank size before assuming availability.
The live page lists HSS M2, M35 and M42. M2 provides practical toughness and wear resistance, while M35 and M42 add cobalt for higher hot hardness and abrasive wear resistance. Grade selection depends on point size, stripping force, sheet strength, speed, cooling and expected failure mode.
The point length must be long enough to pass through the stripper, penetrate the sheet, enter the die opening and provide a regrinding allowance. However, excessive point length reduces stiffness and increases the risk of bending and snapping. Point length must be balanced against available support and die thickness.
The page lists 50, 70, 80 and 100 mm plus custom lengths. These are overall lengths. The final drawing must also define the point length, the transition or step length, guided length and shank length, because overall length alone does not verify the punch’s structural or functional design.
Clearance is defined per side between the punch point and the die opening. It should be selected based on sheet material, thickness, tensile strength, edge quality requirement and acceptable burr. Correct clearance is crucial for step punches to prevent high stripping drag from breaking the small point.
Tight clearance increases cutting load, friction, heat, secondary shear, stripping force, abrasive wear and slug jamming. High stripping friction can easily snap a slender point or pull the punch head from its retainer. The point diameter and die opening must be strictly controlled and aligned.
Excessive clearance can cause the sheet material to draw or roll into the die opening before fracturing. This creates rollover, heavy burr, dimensional variation and may cause the slug to pull back up with the punch. The required clearance balances hole quality against reliable stripping.
Slug pulling occurs when the punched slug sticks to the punch point and is drawn back out of the die. A pulled slug can jam between the strip and the punch step or stripper plate on the next stroke. Because step punches often have small points, the back pressure and impact will snap them immediately.
A step punch is often guided on its larger shank or step section through a close-fitting bushing in the stripper plate. This support reduces deflection, limits vibration and keeps the small cutting point aligned with the die opening. Guidance must not grip the step so tightly that the punch binds.
